International Conference on Flood Resilience Experiences in Asia and Europe

Flooding places enormous pressures on national economies, cities, communities and individuals. The short-term impacts may include hundreds of casual-ties, many displaced people, very serious health problems and huge damage to property and infrastructure. Recovery in the affected areas may take years.

The International Conference on Flood Resilience – Experiences in Asia and Europe is organised by the Centre for Water Systems, University of Exeter. It will be held in Exeter, 5-7 September 2013 and aims to gather professionals to present and discuss the latest research advances and practices in the development and implementation of resilience measures and flood management plans.

The focus on cities in Asia and Europe is motivated by the approach applied within the EU-funded FP7 project CORFU that investigates differences in flooding problems and solutions in a number of case studies in these two continents. The wider objective is to enable the broadening of horizons and better joining of people, ideas and methodologies.

The three day conference will address the issues of flood resilience through a combination of keynote lectures and paper and poster sessions. ICFR invites contributions on the following topics:

  • urban development and flood risk; coupling of climate change with economic growth and urban growth scenarios
  • weather radar technology in flood forecasting and analysis; real-time urban flood information systems; flash floods
  • data collection and model calibration; advances in urban flood modelling; mixed probabilistic/deterministic approaches
  • flood hazard mapping; strategies to enhance community preparedness; communication of un-certainties in flood risk management
  • flood impacts on human health; assessment of tangible and intangible losses in integrated risk analysis
  • resilient cities; evaluation of resilience measures; adaptive flood risk management plans; flooding and other hazards
  • flood risk perception; minimizing social impacts of urban floods; experiences in flood recovery; policy instruments and governance issues
  • shared lessons from Asia and Europe; problems of coastal cities and mega-cities; international comparative case studies
